The land at The Habitat is mostly wooded, with a creek cutting through it and a small, picturesque brook feeding into the creek. The air is clean, with hardly any light or noise pollution, a good bit of nature noise, and stellar views day and night.
Our family lives in tiny cabins on 31 acres in the North Carolina foothills near Chimney Rock (we see the back of Chimney Rock Mountain from our house). We are all into music and are nature lovers, and the adults are teachers of science, math, and philosophy.
Our intention is to provide ways for folks to visit, immerse in the natural world, practice a simple lifestyle, and hopefully experience a bit of the good life. We aim to maintain a community of people who care for the world and can take care of ourselves and each other. We want to foster beautiful experiences, whatever forms they take. Right now we are working towards a long-term goal of creating a self-sufficient community.
Since 2019 we have hosted over 100 visitors who stayed anywhere from a few days to a few years, living in small bedroom structures around the land or in tents. Many of them have become lifelong friends who return from time-to-time to share life with us again. Most visitors found us on our Workaway host site, which is linked to at the end of this post if you want to check us out. We have yet to charge anyone for staying here and provide tasty vegan meals to anyone who’s hungry. We feel that kindness, compassion, and respect for all living things should be embraced by everyone, and we help visitors to strive to uphold these values while staying with us. This is a beautiful place, and we hope all visitors will help us maintain and improve on its beauty.
We created this website to share our stories and ideas. Future blog posts will be a mixture of Habitat stories and philosophical reflections. Hopefully you’ll check back for weekly posts!
